Southern Arizona Hosts the World

Citizen Diplomacy Alliance has begun a new phase in it’s international work that brings more information, more knowledge and greater cooperation to Southern Arizona.

The first is the Speaker Series where every two months (except for December, that program will be in January) we bring in speakers on subjects of interest to present to the community.

In April we had Norman Houston, Director of the Northern Ireland Institute in Washington, D.C. as our speaker at our annual meeting hosted by the Mexican Consulate.  His talk on the status of Northern Ireland and the history behind it was fascinating.

Then in June the speaker was Andrew Selee, author of Vanishing Frontiers: The Forces Driving Mexico and the United States Together.  His book is available on Amazon and well worth the read.  His views on the situation between Mexico and the US give hope to the future for business and peace. This program was hosted at Pima Community College District Office.

Upcoming on October 25 will be Jerry Payton, Executive Director of Sold No More, an organization working with Human Trafficking victims.  Joining Mr. Payton will be members from the Tucson Police Department, the Pima County Sheriff’s office, the Mexican Consulate and the US Consulate in Nogales, Sonora.  Moderator will be Ricardo Castro-Salazar, Vice President of International Division, Pima Community College.  The event will be at the District Office of Pima Community College beginning at 5:30.  There will be a small admission charge to this event to help defray costs.

In January we will be hosting speakers on the holocaust, survivors will tell their stories, answer questions and share with you the real horrors faced by so many people.  This panel will be lead by Raisa Moroz from the JFCS of Southern Arizona.  Details will follow shortly.

March’s program is still pending, may be an exciting musical extravaganza.

The other change is that Citizen Diplomacy Alliance will be working with 7&8th grade girls from Sonora, Mexico on STEM.  This program is partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State.

South Tucson will also benefit from a program on STEAM by the Alliance.  This program will be for 7&8th grade students to encourage them to look at the possibilities that are available if they study hard to give them an interesting and profitable future in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts or Math.
